Are you one of those people who like to have a hot shower just before bedtime or after a long day at work?

If so, you know your water heater is your most trusted appliance at home. But do you know how to maintain your water heater in top shape?

#1: Test Your Pressure Release Valve

Your water heater’s pressure release valve is a vital safety feature that prevents it from over-pressuring and combining. You can test your valve by releasing pressure from it. First, you must turn off the power to your water heater. Then, lift and remove the valve handle. You should hear a rush of air or a gurgling sound, indicating that the valve is working. Remember, if you notice any leaks, contact a qualified plumber immediately.

#2: Flush Your Tank Regularly

Over time, your water heater's tank accumulates sediment and other debris that can block the heating element and reduce the heater's efficiency. You should flush your tank at least once a year to avoid this. The flushing process involves draining water from the tank and using a hose to remove residual sediment. Flushing improves the heater's lifespan and provides cleaner and safer hot water.

#3: Check the Anode Rod

The anode rod is a long, thin metal rod designed to attract corrosive particles in the water and prevent them from eating away inside the tank. The anode rod rusts over time, a natural process indicating it is doing its job. However, the rod deteriorates after a while, and you must replace it. Check the rod every six months and replace it once it is less than 1/4 inch thick.

#4: Inspect the Temperature and Pressure Gauge

The temperature and pressure gauge shows the water temperature inside the tank and the pressure it is subject to. You should check the gauge periodically and ensure it does not show signs of wear and tear. Also, remember to check if it is set to the right temperature to ensure maximum efficiency.

#5: Keep the Area Around the Heater Clear

Finally, ensure that the area around your water heater is kept clean and free from any materials that may obstruct airflow or catch fire. Your water heater should have at least two feet of clearance around its sides and five feet around the top. Keeping your heater clear helps it run efficiently and reduces the risk of accidents.
